Adventures in Television: More Human Than Human
Good stories make us think differently than we did before we experienced the story. This is true whether the story is written, spoken, or filmed. While we can learn from non-fiction (such as history), often legends and “made-up” stories are the ones that make a deep impression on us and stick with us as we journey through our own life. This class will examine the question of “what does it mean to be human?” by exploring examples from contemporary television. Using shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, and Doctor Who, the class will spend six weeks looking at the question “Are we human because of our physical body and chemistry or because of our actions and choices?” from a variety of perspectives. Come join us as we work to answer that question. The class is open to humans, vampires with souls, and reformed Cylons; however, Daleks need not apply. 12 hours. Instructor: Dale Koontz
