Manufacturing Certification Program

An innovative training program has been instituted by Cleveland Community College in response to the high number of displaced workers in Cleveland County. The North Carolina Manufacturing Certification Program (MCP) is a 102-hour class providing the types of basic skills needed to succeed in a manufacturing environment.

The competency-based course offering was developed utilizing industry-based standards, manufacturing skills surveys, and interviews with representatives of leading North Carolina manufacturers. The course of study includes four core classes in manufacturing concepts and skills including math, teamwork and communication and problem solving. Elective courses include blueprint reading and statistical process control. Developed by the North Carolina Community College System, the MCP program is standardized across the state.

Tuition and materials for the Manufacturing Certification Program are $130. Eligible students may apply for tuition to be paid by Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funds.

Service Certification Program

Service jobs are a fast growing segment of jobs nationwide and in Cleveland County. Employers realize that customer service is a key to repeat business and the best advertising a company can have.

Cleveland Community College’s Continuing Education department answered the call for training in the service area by introducing the Service Certificate Program in the Spring of 2003. Developed and piloted by Blue Ridge Community College, CCC is only the second community college in the state to offer the program.

Whether dealing with the external or internal customer, an employee needs to have service skills. The program addresses dealing with co-workers as well as the public. Employees, and potential employees, at all stages of their career will find the training beneficial.

Based on the successful Manufacturing Certification Program, the Service Certificate Program follows a set course of core classes. Students must complete each course and pass an assessment for each of the courses to receive the certificate.

Seven core courses are required to complete the certification. Teamwork and Communication focuses on the characteristics and benefits of effective work teams, the stages of group development, and how to improve relationships with others by communicating more effectively. Making a Hit with your Customer provides tips on how to win customers and keep them coming back. Problem-Solving Techniques provides problem-solving skills to bring about desirable outcomes for both sides. Making the Most of Your Time focuses on improving performance and reducing stress by learning how to focus time and energy on results versus activities. Living with Change explores the impact of change on individuals, the kinds of emotions brought forth by major change, and the stages of change. Managing Conflicts provides insights for determining conflict management style and how to recognize the conflict style of others. Packaging Yourself for Success explores work ethics and attitudes that demonstrate professionalism.

Currently, two local companies have participated in the Service Certificate Program. Sara Lee Intimate Apparel has utilized the training for the companies customer service employees. McDonald’s utilized the course during the spring for crew leaders and management and started another round of courses this summer. Bill Sherwood, owner/operator of the local restaurants prefers the training as a personal development tool.

“Even though it is a class in service, it really is a class in personal development,” said Sherwood. “The more competent we are as individuals, the better we will be collectively as a company.”

The Service Certificate Program was developed in response to service provider’s requests. Employers identified skills and competencies they expect employees to have. The Service Certificate Program helps people attain these skills. While there is no guarantee of employment or promotion, employers believe the graduates of the Service Certificate Program are the kind of job applicants they need.

It is expected that participants successfully completing the program will be better able to: communicate effectively with customers, handle a variety of situations, approach problem-solving in a systematic way, handle difficult customers, deal with change in a positive manner, and act appropriately and professionally with regard to behavior and physical appearance.
