Cleveland Community College Will Go Tobacco-Free on August 1, 2007

The Cleveland Community College Board of Trustees voted today to implement a tobacco-free policy beginning August 1, 2007. The new policy will eliminate the designated smoking areas and prohibit the use of smokeless tobacco on the campus. Tobacco use in college buildings and vehicles is currently prohibited.

Since August 2006, a college committee has been researching the possibility of becoming a 100 percent tobacco-free campus. Efforts were funded with a grant from the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund. The committee was made up of a cross-section of College faculty, staff, and students. All members of the College family were invited to participate.

On-campus surveys evaluating tobacco use and the desire to adopt a campus-wide tobacco-free policy supported the policy change. The Student Government Association and the College’s Administrative Council endorsed the new policy.

“The college’s committee spent months researching the possibility of the policy change,” said S. Bobby Rauf, the Trustee representative on the committee. “Our students requested that we consider making our campus tobacco-free. Our research shows that we have significant support by both students and faculty.”

“It has been less than a year since the general assembly has allowed community colleges to implement a tobacco-free policy,” according to Dr. L. Steve Thornburg, CCC president. “I am proud that our student body has been a leader in the state. We are one of only a handful of community colleges in North Carolina that has adopted a tobacco-free policy.”

Dr. Thornburg added, “The new policy is designed to create a safe, healthy, and clean environment for all students attending class, for our employees, and for our visitors. The policy will address the issues of second-hand smoke and will prepare our students for a tobacco-free work environment that they will most likely encounter when they leave CCC.”

“We will begin construction on the Bailey Allied Health and Science Center in a few months. With our emphasis on healthcare education and our relationship with the Cleveland County HealthCare System, going tobacco-free makes sense for us,” according to Rauf. “Most importantly, it is the right thing to do.”

CCC will begin promoting the policy change. The college is already working with the Cleveland County Health Department and the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund to provide cessation support to faculty, staff, and students.
