The Biotechnology curriculum,
which has emerged from molecular biology and chemical engineering, is
designed to meet the increasing demands for skilled laboratory technicians in
various fields of biological and chemical technology. Course work emphasizes biology,
chemistry, mathematics, and technical communications. The curriculum
objectives are designed to prepare graduates to serve in three distinct
capacities: research assistant to a biologist or chemist; laboratory
technician/instrumentation technician, and quality control/quality assurance
technician. Graduates may find employment in
various areas of industry and government, including research and development,
manufacturing, sales, and customer service. The Biotechnology AAS program
began Fall 2006. Students should complete all prerequisites needed to satisfy
course requirements as soon as they enter the program. Many biotechnology
courses have prerequisites and a student should familiarize themselves with
the course descriptions found in the 2009-2010 Cleveland Community College
Academic Bulletin and Student Handbook. This program has been articulated
with Bachelor degree programs in Biology at UNC Charlotte and UNC Greensboro.
Other agreements are being formulated at this time. Potential employment
opportunities are available within Cleveland County and surrounding areas.
Biotechnology is expected to grow tremendously over the next few years in the
Charlotte-Piedmont region. We are ready to offer you the advanced skills and education
needed to enter and excel in this career pathway! Download Biotechnology brochure
