Procedure for Placing Holds Using the CCLINC Online Catalog Patron Directions

Why place a hold?

  • because Cleveland does not have the book, but another CCLINC library does, or
  • because someone has Cleveland’s copy checked out

What does placing a hold do?

  • requests that another library send the item to Cleveland for you to borrow, or
  • places you on the waiting list for an item

How do I place a hold?

Double check the CCLINC catalog to be sure that the item is not available at Cleveland. If you are not sure, ask a library staff member to help you.

Search for the title at ALL libraries.

Choose beside the title you want to request or reserve.

Click on the button.

Click on "Place Hold."

In the "user ID" box type 2350XXXXXXXXX0 with the Xs being the number printed on your library card. (You are adding 2350 to the beginning of the number and 0 to the end.) You can use your social security number instead of your ID number but this does not always work. Your PIN is the last four digits of your social security number.

Click on the button.

If there is an error, read the message to see what action should be taken:

If the message says to enter the correct PIN, try again to be sure the PIN was typed in correctly. If you still get the message, contact the circulation desk and talk to a staff member.

If the message says "user not found", check the user ID or alternate ID and be sure these numbers were entered correctly. If these were entered correctly, contact the circulation desk and talk to a staff member.

If the message says that the user cannot place a hold on any items, you may be blocked for some reason (overdues, fines, address problems). If that is not the case, check the libraries where the book is located; currently, there are two colleges which are not accepting holds (Richmond and South Piedmont). Both of these colleges are new to CCLINC, and are not ready to fill holds at this point. The message that displays now for items owned only by these two libraries says "You may not place a hold on an item in another library", which is very misleading.

If the hold was placed successfully, a screen with your name and the item you requested will appear. Click OK.
